Goal 5 Progress Report

Updates

Our team met January 16, 2008 and plans to meet again Tuesday, February 5, 2008. In our meeting Tuesday, we will decide a date for open campus forums with students to discuss ideas about student activities. On the 16th, we discussed opportunities for professors to take advantage of the Lecture Series. We discussed ways to clear up the confusion about the campus-wide calendar and the fact that students are complaining about all the different places to look to obtain information.

We also talked about how we could work directly with faculty and get information to them in time for them to use this information in their classes. We will discuss other items in our next meeting.

Subject: Strategic Plan Goal #5 report

Action Step 1: Implement a comprehensive plan to publicize campus events.

1. While there is still some confusion, there is an online easy to use calendar for all events. Team #5 will work with IT to assure that the confusion is cleared up as soon as possible. 2. The consensus of our team is that students are being sent too many messages from too many places. We are not sure how to resolve this issue but it will be something that will be discussed in the student forum. 3. The student newspaper will soon be online with only a few issues coming out on paper. Our hope is that more students will then access the paper. 4. Our team plans to add assistance from Bill Finley the Director of Institutional Research to come up with ideas about how to track who is participating, why, and if increased participation has an impact on productivity.

Action Step 2: Develop expectations and incentives for student, faculty, and staff participation in co-curricular events.

1. As chairperson of our team, I have asked the members to re-focus on what we were really trying to achieve that, our ultimate goal was retention and success of our students. That it was important for our staff and faculty to be involved but in the context of increasing the enrichment of our students. 2. Our team is requesting that each faculty member include in their syllabus under expectations that students for their own growth strongly consider attending co-curriculum events on campus. We would also encourage the faculty offer incentives such as bonus points or extra credit for attending aforementioned events. 3. Team #5 will be sponsoring an open forum facilitated by team members to give students an opportunity to express ideas and concerns for future activities. 4. Our team will sponsor in late April a thank you luncheon for faculty and staffs that have cooperated in encouraging students to participate in campus events and allow them to talk about their experiences and the impact that participation had on their students.

Action Step 3: Expand and diversify student authority and responsibility for programming and delivery of co-curricular events.

1. We have expanded our lecture series committee to include more faculty and we have widened the scope of the committee we now include the Carroll Lecture and the President’s Lecture Series. 2. Student Government works extensively with all campus organizations as we have discussed earlier. 3. Our team would like to look at ways to offer childcare services at events or activities that allow students with children to participate. 4. Develop an online process for students to submit ideas for events. 5. Target events that can become campus traditions. 6. Create a position (Assistant Director of Student Activities and Falcon Center Conference Director) who could handle events of student groups as well deal with the outside public for booking events.

Wiki Training

Committee members and staff received training on use of the campus wiki in late January.

Strategic Plan Goal 5 Progress Update, November 2007

Goal 5. Create a student life environment that enhances participation in campus events.

November, 2007. Michael Belmear, Implementation Team Chair.

  • Currently this semester our committee has met once; a second meeting is planned for Thursday, November 15, 2007. This will be our last meeting until second semester.
  • Our plan is to expand our team by adding Barbara Fallon because of her background and relationship with the New Student Seminar.

Action Step 1:

Implement a comprehensive communication plan to publicize campus events.

  • The campus calendar is up and running and we are encouraging groups to utilize the big screen on Main Street.
  • We are still looking for ways to address utilizing the local media better to publish our events.

Action Step 2:

Expand and diversify student authority and responsibility for programming and delivery of co-curricular events.

  • Our biggest effort this semester has been campus collaboration, working with other groups on campus to increase involvement. Our team felt that if groups - especially student groups - felt a part of our activities, they would be more incline to participate. Our Goal 5 Why Collaborate page explains why collaboration is important and how we have begun to implement the process.

Action Step 3:

Develop expectations and incentives for student, faculty, and staff participation in co-curricular events.

  • Our group has requested faculty to include in their syllabus for their classes a request for more student participation and we need to see if that has happened.
