Fairmont State to Host 2014 Governor's Honors Academy

Fairmont State University will host the 2014 Governor’s Honors Academy on its main campus in Fairmont on June 29 through July 19.

Dr. J. Robert Baker, Director of the Honors Program at FSU, will serve as dean. About 200 high school juniors will participate in the three-week residential program administered by the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts. The West Virginia Department of Education also assists with in-kind support. The theme of the 2014 GHA is “The Good Life.”

Professor Calls Prichard Hall Home

When students move into a dorm they expect to see many things: bunk beds, TVs and refrigerators. What they don’t expect to find is a professor living among them. Through a pilot program in Prichard Hall, this is exactly what residents have found, and as a result the whole campus is benefitting.

Project May Create First Rooftop Gardens On Campus

English major and Michigan native Brad Riffee is creating a plan that could lead to the first rooftop gardens across the Fairmont State University campus.

 For Riffee, who has family roots in West Virginia, a summer of high tech gardening was also a way of impacting his community. His inspiration came from Voltaire’s comic novel “Candide,” where the hero establishes a small farm on which he and his friends keep themselves from the three great evils: poverty, vice and boredom.
