WV Criminal Justice Educators Association to Meet at FSU

Fairmont State University will host the West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators Association (WVCJEA) 18th Annual State Conference on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13 and 14, on its main campus in Fairmont.

Criminal Justice majors from colleges and universities around the state will participate in a crime scene competition and paper competition.

Conference registration will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Falcon Center. The registration cost is $25 for faculty, $20 for faculty dues, $15 for students and $10 for guests.

Counter Terrorism Expert to Speak on Campus Oct. 1

An expert in counter narcotics and counter terrorism will speak on campus on Wednesday, Oct. 1, sponsored by the National Security & Intelligence Program, the Criminal Justice Department and the Open Source Intelligence Exchange at Fairmont State University.

Retired DEA Special Agent Charles Gardner will discuss “How to Put a Business Out of Business” Attacking Organized Crime at 1 p.m. Oct. 1 in the third floor Falcon Center conference rooms. The event is open to students, faculty and staff. A reception will follow.

Buckhannon Student Receives Sgt. Todd May Memorial Scholarship

A Buckhannon student attending Fairmont State University has been awarded the 2014-2015 Sgt. Todd May Memorial Scholarship.

Aimee Knight, a senior Criminal Justice major, was presented with the scholarship during the FSU College of Liberal Arts Academic Awards Ceremony in May. She joins past scholarship recipients Cory Frasco and Tyler Hawkins.

Criminal Justice Students Take Top Honors in National Competition

Fairmont State University Criminal Justice students recently took top honors at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences/Alpha Phi Sigma National Conference in Philadelphia. Two FSU students also earned individual honors.

Nicole Allison of New Cumberland won first place in the Criminal Justice General Knowledge Exam and first place in the Special Topics/Victimology Exam. Each first came with a $500 prize.

FBI CJIS Official Presents Talk on Campus

The National Security and Intelligence Program and the Open Source Intelligence Exchange at Fairmont State sponsored a special event for students, faculty and staff on Sept. 26.

Assistant Director David Cuthbertson of the Criminal Justice Information Services Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation visited campus and presented a talk on “The FBI’s CJIS Division: Providing Identity Intelligence to Our Partners in Law Enforcement.”

Sept. 17 Event to Commemorate U.S. Constitution Day

Fairmont State University will celebrate the 226th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution with activities on Tuesday, Sept. 17, hosted by the FSU College of Liberal Arts.

Sponsored by Alpha Phi Sigma as part of the Constitution Day Celebration, students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to sign a copy of the Constitution between 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the second floor Main Street area of the Falcon Center. Free patriotic lanyards and pocket copies of the Constitution will be given away.

Students and Faculty Participate in Make Marion County Shine

Fairmont State University was proud to participate in the Make Marion County Shine initiative and partner with Main Street Fairmont with a clean-up of Locust Avenue on Saturday, April 6. The team of 18 students, faculty, staff and community members picked up 48 bags of trash in four hours. Participating students represented the Occupational Safety program, Alpha Phi Sigma (Criminal Justice Honor Society), S.T.A.N.D., Tau Kappa Epsilon and Student Government. The Office of Institutional Advancement and Physical Plant also supported the initiative.
