FSU Students Win Scholarships from Contractors Association of WV

The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) Scholarship Foundation distributed $16,000 this year to West Virginia college students pursuing an education and career in construction or engineering. Recipients were selected on the basis of their academic performance, extracurricular activities, work experience, financial need and interest in a construction industry career. Eligible schools include West Virginia University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Marshall University, Fairmont State University and Bluefield State College.

ASCE Student Chapter Wins 12th Regional Concrete Canoe Competition

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter continues its tradition of excellence and for the 12th consecutive year will represent the region at the National Concrete Canoe Competition.

FSU’s ASCE Student Chapter won first place in the Concrete Canoe Competition over the weekend at the 2015 Virginias Conference, hosted by Virginia Military Institute. The FSU team won first place in all five concrete canoe races, first place in final product, second place in technical paper and third place for oral presentation.

Fairmont State University’s American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter continued its tradition of excellence and for the 11th consecutive year represented the region at the National Concrete Canoe Competition.

Civil Engineering Student Awarded Scholarship

A Fairmont State University student was among three Civil Engineering students awarded scholarships by the North Central West Virginia Section of The American Society of Highway Engineers.

At its annual Commissioners Banquet held on April 2 at the Bridgeport Conference Center, WVDOT Secretary/Commissioner of Transportation Paul Mattox presented $1,500 scholarships to George Lynch of Fairmont State and to Brandon LeRoy and Guadalupe Leon, both of West Virginia University.

First Key to Success Is Getting Involved

From his first semester, Jaron Hollida knew the key to his success would be getting involved on campus.

“I didn’t know anyone when I came here. I was three hours from home,” says the Martinsburg native. “I joined clubs and instantly made the right group of friends. Involve yourself in clubs. Getting involved adds to what you learn and helps you build more independence. Getting involved keeps you busy and out of trouble. A lot of opportunities, like internships, come with being involved.”
