Senior English Education Major Wins National Poetry Competition

A Fairmont State University senior English Education major has been selected as one of two winners of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS) College/University Level Poetry Competition.

Ian Williams, a Fairmont native, was selected as one of two first-place winners by a panel of three independent judges at the competition for his manuscript “House of Bones.” Williams will graduate from FSU in May and plans to pursue an MFA in Poetry. The other first-prize winner, Lisa Levin, is a senior at UC-Berkeley.

Six Alumni to Be Honored as Part of Homecoming 2013

As part of Homecoming 2013 for Fairmont State University, six exceptional alumni will be honored at the annual Alumni Awards Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Gift from Alumnus Supports Student Scholarships

Fairmont State University students will benefit from the gift of an alumnus who believed education was a way to create opportunity.

William Claude “Bill” Waters, who spent his career dedicated to education, passed away in July 2012 at age 93. Through a bequest from his estate, Waters has provided a $730,000 gift to the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc., that will be used for FSU student scholarships. Waters previously made more than $63,000 in gifts to the University.

WV Campus Compact Honors FSU Professors

West Virginia Campus Compact, a coalition of 28 college and universities that encourages and supports community engagement in higher education, honored Fairmont State University with multiple awards at its annual statewide conference.

Fairmont State professor Matt Schmuck’s Friends of Fifth Street Park Project was recognized as the winner of the Campus-Community LINK Partnership Award. The award honors outstanding community service learning partnerships that are grantees of West Virginia Campus Compact’s LINK program.
