Author Geraldine Brooks to Speak April 3

The Celebration of Ideas Lecture Series at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College brings nationally prominent speakers of diverse viewpoints to campus each fall and spring. “Year of Wonders” by Geraldine Brooks was the selected work for the campus-wide Common Reading Project for 2011-2012. In culmination of that project, Brooks will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Colebank Hall Gym as part of the lecture series.

Women of Color Luncheon Planned for April 24

The annual Women of Color Luncheon, a celebration of diversity and achievement, is planned for noon Tuesday, April 24, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms. The event, sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, which serves Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, is intended to honor those who have shown a commitment for treating people equally and for celebrating diversity. This year’s event will be organized by Dr. Tara Brooks, Director of Multicultural Affairs.

As a follow up February’s Black History Month program on “The Aubrey Stewart Project,” the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host a showing of the movie “The Wereth 11” on the shared main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College. The event will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Falcon Center third floor conference rooms. Admission is free and open to the public.

American Shakespeare Center on Campus March 23-25

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and the Department of Language and Literature present the American Shakespeare Center’s “Almost Blasphemy Tour” for a week of Elizabethan lyricism, love and oh-so-bitter woe. Three separate productions will take place in Wallman Hall Theatre — “The Winter’s Tale,” “ ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The ticket price for each performance is $10 per person.  The Celebration of Ideas Lecture Series at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College brings nationally prominent speakers of diverse viewpoints to campus each fall and spring. The series continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in Colebank Hall Gym with Liz Murray, whose life story was the subject of the Lifetime Television movie “From Homeless to Harvard.”

Attend the Job Fair on Feb. 28

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students, alumni and members of the community interested in employment are invited to attend the annual Job Fair hosted by the Office of Career Services. More than 70 companies and agencies are registered to attend the event. The fair will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Falcon Center, Gym 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Office of Student Affairs will present an event on the main campus of Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College in commemoration of Black History Month. Piedmont native T.J. Coleman has made it his mission to share the story of Sgt. James Aubrey Stewart and to use the experience to promote racial understanding. He will give a presentation, titled “The Aubrey Stewart Project: Unity Through One Race…The Human Race,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in Multi-media Room A of the Ruth Ann Musick Library.
