IBM Academic Initiative Provides Real-World Experience

Fairmont State University produces well-trained, well-seasoned interns who are ready to tackle the business world.

FSU senior and Moorefield native Lucas Myers recently completed an internship with for the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area. The internship was awarded through the IBM Academic Initiative.

As an Information Systems Management major, Myers, 23, learned computer programming and database management in his FSU classes.

ENTROS to Highlight Two FSU Programs

As part of the ENTROS “Entrepreneurs and Introductions” series created by the I-79 Development Council, two Fairmont State University programs will be highlighted at a special event on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Begun in 2011, ENTROS “Entrepreneurs and Introductions” is an initiative of the I-79 Development Council (I79DC) focusing on startups or small businesses and the entrepreneurs who create them. The Sept. 6 session will feature exhibits and presentations about FSU’s Open Source Intelligence Exchange (OSIX) and IBM Academic Initiative.

Bridging the gap between higher education and industry, the IBM Academic Initiative matches graduates’ information technology skills with workforce needs. Fairmont State University is the only college or university in the state participating and is already experiencing successful outcomes.

Fairmont State University students and faculty will benefit from a new partnership with Mobile Collaborative Education Consulting and the IBM Academic Initiative.

“As a result of this partnership, Fairmont State faculty will gain access to innovative technology, and our students will receive first-class learning opportunities to prepare them for today’s competitive marketplace,” said Dr. Maria Rose, FSU Interim President.

Rose and John Thompson, president/owner of Mobile Collaborative Education Consulting (MCEC), signed a partnership agreement on Aug. 11.
