Trisels Named State Beekeepers of the Year

What began as a hobby for Don Trisel, a professor of biology at Fairmont State University, and his wife Kim has become much more over the years.

About 10 years ago, the Trisels purchased a piece of land behind their home in Farmington.

“It was all forest,” Trisel said. “We had some beekeeper friends at church, and I suggest­ed that they come out and put some hives on our property and take advantage of that resource.”

Instead, the Trisels’ friends made another suggestion.

They navigated painstakingly programmed LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT robots through a maze of missions and obstacles. They gave well-honed science presentations to dedicated volunteer judges. They offered solutions to challenges facing senior citizens using elaborate exhibits. They demonstrated what teamwork and professionalism look like.

FSU to Host FIRST LEGO League Robotic Tournament

The Fairmont State University College of Science and Technology will host the West Virginia FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) tournament on Saturday, Dec. 8.

An international robotics program in partnership with LEGO®, the FLL is part of the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) organization, an international nonprofit agency with the mission of inspiring the future workforce to appreciate the excitement and personal rewards of a career in science and technology.

Exploration Days Offered for Prospective Students and Families

The Office of Admissions & Recruitment invites prospective students and families to explore their options at Fairmont State University. On select days throughout the regular semester, academic-based Exploration Days will be held on the main campus in Fairmont, W.Va.

The following dates are scheduled as Exploration Days: Jan. 24 and 25, Feb. 15 and April 19 in 2013.

At the free event, participants will meet with an Admissions Counselor, visit one of FSU’s six academic colleges and schools and meet in small groups with faculty and/or academic deans.

FSU Awarded Strengthening Institutions Grant

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Fairmont State University a five-year Strengthening Institutions Program grant totaling nearly $2 million. The grant will provide enhanced learning opportunities to help students succeed.

“Fairmont State University is honored to have received one of only thirteen new Title III Strengthening Institutions grants awarded nationwide. This grant will allow the University to dedicate resources to the retention of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and School of Business students,” said Dr. Maria Rose, FSU President.

ENTROS to Highlight Two FSU Programs

As part of the ENTROS “Entrepreneurs and Introductions” series created by the I-79 Development Council, two Fairmont State University programs will be highlighted at a special event on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Begun in 2011, ENTROS “Entrepreneurs and Introductions” is an initiative of the I-79 Development Council (I79DC) focusing on startups or small businesses and the entrepreneurs who create them. The Sept. 6 session will feature exhibits and presentations about FSU’s Open Source Intelligence Exchange (OSIX) and IBM Academic Initiative.
