Woodwind Quintet Recital Set for Nov. 23

The Fairmont State University Woodwind Quintet, “Cinq Nuances de Violette,” coached by Dr. Constance Edwards, will perform a recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in Wallman Hall Room 229.  

The ensemble features Nicolle Davis on flute and piccolo, Candace Walker on oboe, Kayla Keefover on clarinet, Rayme Pullen on horn and Heidi Newcome on bassoon. Works include a Hungarian March by Franz Schubert, a set of Russian Folksongs by Anatoly Liadov, solo works by each performer and a set of dances by Denes Agay.  

FSU Marching Band Stadium Review Concert Nov. 14

Named by NBCs ProFootball Talk as “the best small collegiate band in the United States,” the Fairmont State University Marching Band will present its annual Stadium Review Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Colebank Hall.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, call (304) 367-4219. At the concert, there will be a raffle for a quilt made from the old band uniform and a throw made just for the evening’s performance. Tickets for the raffle will be sold at the door.

Fairmont State University produces well-trained, well-seasoned interns who are ready to tackle the business world.

FSU senior and Moorefield native Lucas Myers recently completed an internship with for the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area. The internship was awarded through the IBM Academic Initiative.

As an Information Systems Management major, Myers, 23, learned computer programming and database management in his FSU classes.

When West Virginia-born Homer Hickam stood in his backyard watching the Soviet satellite Sputnik orbit the Earth, he had no way of knowing it would lead him to a life filled with scientific discovery and artistic expression. Fans of Hickam’s work will be enchanted by the whimsical dramatization of his experiences in the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts production of “Rocket Boys The Musical.”

Kestrel Issue 30 Launch Celebrates Writing

Kestrel: A Journal of Literature and Art, the Fairmont State University Department of Language and Literature and the Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center will host a two-day Celebration of Issue 30 in October.

Eight contributors to Kestrel, including six whose work appears in Issue 30, will be on campus to participate in a panel discussion and offer individual consultations for writers, as well as give readings from their own work.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Planned for New Writing Center

The public is invited, along with Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College faculty, staff and students, to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Fairmont State’s new Writing Center. The ceremony will take place in Room 308 of Jaynes Hall from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The Writing Center was initiated as a proposal for a new Accelerated Learning program. The funds were issued to Fairmont State by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to support a pilot Accelerated Developmental Learning project.
