Whether it’s on the field or in a parade, you can hear Will Johnston’s trumpet.

Johnston, who has played trumpet since fifth grade, now plays trumpet for both the Fairmont State University marching band and jazz band. On the field, he is assisted by Nicole Davis, a volunteer who does not receive class credit for her actions.

Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone syndrome, Johnston uses a wheelchair.

But this hasn’t caused him to not dream big.

The 2014 RESA 7 Science Bowl will take place on Thursday, Dec. 10, in the Engineering Technology Building on the main Fairmont State University campus. The competition is hosted and sponsored in collaboration with RESA 7; Fairmont State University; and the U.S. Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. with the final round to determine the winner starting at 2:30 p.m. in Room 303 of the Engineering Technology Building.

In Calhoun County, you don’t need special equipment to see billions of stars—just gaze up at the night sky. The West Virginia county is closer to maximizing a vital asset – darkness – through a partnership between Fairmont State University and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with support from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

The Fairmont State Foundation has named Jessica Sell Director of Development. Sell comes to the Foundation after serving the last three years on the staff of Senator Joe Manchin following prior positions at non-profit TSEA, the University of California at Irvine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. FaiHer appointment with the Foundation will begin in January of 2016.

The Fairmont State University Department of Music will present Handel’s “Messiah” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in Colebank Hall on the FSU campus. A free pre-concert reception for ticketholders will start at 7 p.m.

“This is the first time our department will have an event like this showcasing our Bachelor of Science alumni,” said Ann Shaver, Professor of Psychology.

West Virginia’s public colleges and universities are pledging increased support for student veterans during events to be held next week through the state’s “5 Star Challenge” initiative, which launched earlier this fall. The Challenge, which calls on institutions to adopt a set of exemplary standards for supporting student veterans, is a tribute to the military tradition of issuing “challenge coins” to service members who embody the values and standards of their military units.
