"Defying Gravity" Explores Story of the Challenger Disaster

The initial spring semester theatre offering by the Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts and Masquers theatre group is Jane Anderson’s “Defying Gravity,” a fictional account of the circumstances surrounding the 1986 Challenger space shuttle explosion that killed seven crew members, among them teacher Krista McAuliffe. The story is told from the point of view of Elizabeth, the teacher’s adult daughter, as she reminisces about the events, which occurred when she was 5 years old.

West Virginia Symphony Orchestra on Campus Feb. 28

Under the direction of Grant Cooper, Artistic Director and Conductor, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will perform at Fairmont State University on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Containing works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Anton Bruckner, the program will feature pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine. The program will include Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467” and Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 8 in C minor.”

Student Organizations Fair Jan. 22 in Falcon Center

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College students have the opportunity to attend the Student Organizations Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Gym 1 of the Falcon Center.

Sponsored by Student Government, the event will allow students to learn more about the more than 80 student organizations and clubs on campus. There will be free food and giveaways of wristband thumb drives, T-shirts and backpacks. (Quantities of giveaway items will be limited.) Students also will be able to have photos taken at the open air photo booth.

Caperton Center to Participate in College Goal Sunday

The Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg will be one of 23 locations throughout the state to host the annual College Goal SundaySM event on Sunday, Feb. 10, presented by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

Students and parents can receive assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during the free workshops.
