About 400 students will participate in Spring Commencement for Fairmont State University. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Feaster Center. A reception in the Falcon Center will immediately follow the ceremony.

The Fairmont State University Board of Governors has named Dr. Maria C. Bennett Rose as Interim President, and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission today approved the appointment.

Fairmont State University named Tara Brooks as Director of Multicultural Affairs on Jan. 3, 2011. She is also serving as an Associate Professor in the FSU School of Education and Health and Human Performance.

With the passing of Dr. Naomi “Nicki” Boyers Hovatter, Fairmont State University has lost one of its most outstanding and oldest alumni. Hovatter, who died Friday, March 4, at age 103 was honored by the Fairmont State Alumni Association as Outstanding Alumna in 2008. At the Alumni Awards Luncheon that year, she shared some of her memories with those gathered and stated that she attributed her longevity to not resenting growing old and realizing that many are denied the privilege.

Richard Harvey was named Dean of the School of Business in 2008.  Dean Harvey was initially hired by Fairmont State College in 1986 to start a Small Business Development Center.  He joined the faculty in 1988 and is a Professor of Finance and Business Law.  He holds multiple degrees from West Virginia University including an M.B.A. and a J.D which he completed while teaching.  A member of the West Virginia State Bar Association, Harvey practiced law in the areas of elder law and commercial law.  While a faculty member he regularly provided seminars to business owner/managers on financial management and legal issues including business organization, feasibility studies, capital formation, strategic business planning, intellectual property, and financial proposals.

The Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College Bookstore is hosting a book signing for a new book by an FSU adjunct faculty member. Dr. Dennis D. Wainstock teaches history at the Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg. He will sign copies of his book, “The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb: Hiroshima and Nagasaki 1945,” from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at the bookstore located on the second floor of the Falcon Center on the main campus.
