Faculty Member One of Four Finalists in IBM Challenge

A Fairmont State University School of Business faculty member was a finalist in a national challenge.

Dr. Frank Lee, Associate Professor of Information Systems Management, attended the IBM Information On Demand conference in November in Las Vegas. According to IBM’s web site, the conference brought together experts and peers to explore how big data and analytics are changing the way organizations do business. During the show, IBM unveiled new products and services while highlighting new client success stories.

Reception to Celebrate Graduating International Students

In collaboration with the International Education Committee, the Office of International Student Services will host a reception on Friday, Dec. 13, for international students graduating from Fairmont State University.

The reception will take place in the Falcon Center third floor Board Room from noon to 1 p.m. Graduating international students from Korea, Nepal and Saudi Arabia will be recognized and celebrated.

FSU to Host 2013 FIRST LEGO League Robotics Tournament

The Fairmont State University College of Science and Technology will host the West Virginia FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) robotics tournament on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The event will take place at the Falcon Center and will be open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. More than 1,000 people, including 60 teams of students, are expected to attend.

Sponsors of this year’s challenge are NASA IV&V, Fairmont State University, WV Space Grant Consortium, Par Mar Stores, Thrasher Engineering and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

"Black Diamonds" Exhibit on Display in Wallman Hall

Coal is an underlying theme in “Rocket Boys The Musical,” just as it hides underground in the hills of West Virginia. An exhibit called “Black Diamonds” on display at Wallman Hall provides context and history to the story of coal in the Mountain State.

The Fairmont State University School of Fine Arts presented “Rocket Boys The Musical” in November. The “Black Diamonds” exhibit will remain on display in the Tower Room in Wallman Hall until Friday, Dec. 13. Those interested in viewing the exhibit should call Dr. Francene Kirk at (304) 367-4170.

Woodwind Quintet Recital Set for Nov. 23

The Fairmont State University Woodwind Quintet, “Cinq Nuances de Violette,” coached by Dr. Constance Edwards, will perform a recital at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, in Wallman Hall Room 229.  

The ensemble features Nicolle Davis on flute and piccolo, Candace Walker on oboe, Kayla Keefover on clarinet, Rayme Pullen on horn and Heidi Newcome on bassoon. Works include a Hungarian March by Franz Schubert, a set of Russian Folksongs by Anatoly Liadov, solo works by each performer and a set of dances by Denes Agay.
