Collegiate Singers and Chamber Choir Offer Concert

Tuesday, October 08, 2013

The Fairmont State University Collegiate Singers and Chamber Choir will perform in Wallman Hall Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.

The ensembles are directed by Dr. Sam Spears and accompanied by John Morrison of the FSU School of Fine Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.

The program titled “Joy and Pain” evokes feelings from both ends of the emotional spectrum, and it includes texts that juxtapose positive and negative forces in dramatic and insightful ways. The program includes two contrasting settings of the text “O vos omnes” from the Lamentations of Jeremiah: one by the Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria and the other by the modern American composer Z. Randall Stroope. From 20th century Hungarian composer Gyorgy Deak-Bárdos comes “Eli, Eli!”— a vivid setting of the last words of Christ on the cross. On the joyful side are the rollicking drinking chorus “The Barley Mow” and a clever gospel-style version of Beethoven’s “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” featuring soloist Ingrid Poole.
