Windows Update for Active X controls in Internet Explorer causes instability for Live Classroom and other web applications

Microsoft released a Windows update on April 11th, which changes the way that Active X controls are used with the Internet Explorer browser in response to patent litigation between Microsoft and Eolas.  This update may cause instability for Internet Explorer users when accessing websites that make use of Active X controls. Microsoft has acknowledged several issues introduced and are working on a future update to address them. For more information, please visit Microsoft knowledgebase article:

How will this affect Horizon Wimba Live Classroom users who have installed the Windows update?

Users with the following configuration:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Internet Explorer 6.0
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 (aka Sun Java 1.5)
will experience the Internet Explorer browser closing unexpectedly* when:
  • Loading the Live Classroom interface
  • Running the Signed Applet test in the Setup Wizard

* A file named similar to, hs_err_pid3624.log, will appear on the user's desktop after IE closes.

Additionally, users may also receive a prompt "Click to run an ActiveX control on this webpage" when viewing an archive or running the through the Wizard. Clicking OK will allow the user to proceed without problems.

Updated Information

At this time (April 14, 2006), there are no known critical issues present when users install all available Microsoft Windows updates.  Horizon Wimba recommends that all Windows users run the Windows Update program and install all high priority updates.
