Department of Biology, Chemistry and Geoscience
Title:
Associate Professor of Biology
Biography:
Phil Yeager earned a BA. in Zoology from the University of Northern Colorado, an M.S. from University of Wyoming in Entomology and a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in Ecology. Yeager has conducted research in entomology, ecotoxicology and aquatic and microbial ecology. He has written several scientific papers and is coauthor of a book section covering techniques in soil microbiology. At Fairmont State he teaches both majors and non-majors courses in general biology, environmental science, ecology and invertebrate biology. While Yeager enjoys his academic pursuits, he attempts to live his life by Mark Twain's credo, “Never let your schooling get in the way of your education,” and he encourages his students to do the same. To that end, he teaches an Outdoor Leisure course for the Physical Education department and is very active in the out of doors: rock climbing, skiing, bicycling and running, etc.
What have you learned while teaching at Fairmont State?:
That despite the rumors, culture is not dead in West Virginia.
What do students like best about your class?:
Most students seem to enjoy the interactivity of my courses. I like to pose questions to my students and give them a chance to think critically and express their opinions.
