TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM OVERVIEW -
The education of teachers at Fairmont State University is designed to utilize the cooperative functions of the academic disciplines with the School of Education. We believe that adequate preparation for teaching requires a rich and comprehensive experience in general education, a concentration in at least one academic specialization and certain attitudes, knowledge, skills and dispositions which characterize effective teaching.
The role of today’s teacher requires persons skilled at making instructional and managerial decisions to meet the individual and group needs of a diverse population. Recent and continuing advances in technology applied to education require many instructional choices. Beginning teachers must be prepared to meet these challenges.
The University’s undergraduate teacher preparation program has developed the Informed Decision Maker Model, with the goal of preparing our graduates to make instructional decisions based upon a strong foundation of knowledge, skills, and dispositions.EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN TEACHER EDUCATION -
The FSU teacher education programs prepare our candidates to meet WV and many other states’ certification standards. Many teachers in our schools will retire over the next few years providing employment opportunities for our graduates. Presently, there is an abundance of Elementary Teachers in our area and graduates may need to relocate to find employment. However, there is an extreme need for special education, science and mathematics teachers. Because “teaching” is required in almost every profession, graduates are prepared to enter many other professions, as well.
