Admission to Teacher Education -

Any student may enroll in the first professional course, Education 2200, Introduction to Education. It is required of all teacher education students; other students may take it as an elective.

Teacher candidates are expected, in this course, to make a tentative decision on entering the profession and submit a “Declaration of Intent” to the Dean of Teacher Education. This form serves as the point of origin for the candidate’s inclusion into the SOE data bank.

In order to be admitted to teacher education a candidate must have:

  • A score of 18 or above on both the Reading and Composite sections of the ACT
  • Earned passing scores on all three sections of the PPST
  • 2.75 overall GPA, 2.75 Education GPA, 2.75 GPA in each teaching specialization
  • Submitted a Criminal Record Background Check
  • Submitted a Declaration of Intent

Students are expected to apply for admission to teacher education while enrolled in EDUC 2200 and will be notified in writing of the decision to admit or not admit.  Teacher education candidates are expected to achieve a GPA of at lease 2.75 overall in each content area and in professional education courses in order to be admitted to Clinical III/Student Teaching.

Courses and G.P.A. requirements for each content specialization area may be found in the most current Fairmont State Catalog. Each specialization program contains core courses that ensure that teacher candidates have the content knowledge to effectively facilitate learning for all students. Content specialization requirements also enhance the candidates’ ability to be lifelong learners who will remain knowledgeable in their respective content areas.
