OVERVIEW OF THE MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
The mathematics program equips students with analytic and problem solving skills for careers and graduate study. Classes develop students' abilities and aptitudes to apply mathematical methods and ideas to problems in mathematics, sciences, computer science, actuarial science, statistics—virtually any area of inquiry. Students learn to communicate ideas effectively and to digest new information and concepts independently. We offer a B.S. in Mathematics. Mathematics, in conjunction with the School of Education, offers a B.A. degree in education with mathematics teaching specialization for either the 5-8 or 5-12 grade levels.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR MATHEMATICS MAJORS
Graduates of the mathematics program at Fairmont State work for such diverse employers as the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Navy, banking, manufacturing, chemical, computer, and statistics firms. Nearly all recent graduates who are not in graduate school have found employment in mathematics or related fields. Approximately 2/3 of the B.S. graduates and 1/2 of the B.A. Ed. graduates have completed or are working toward advanced degrees. The annual median wage for a mathematician with a B.S. degree is $90,870.00.
