OVERVIEW OF ENGLISH PROGRAM

Within the study of English are composition, literature, and creative and technical writing courses.  A degree in English Literature (B.A.) opens up an exciting array of professions or graduate and professional studies for students who enjoy the critical study of literature; those who want a career in teaching pursue a major in English Education (B.A. Education); and those who wish to pursue a career in writing can minor in technical writing.  Some career options and combinations are shown below.


EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGLISH MAJORS

Education:
Teaching, grades 5-12, with B.A. in Education

Publishing:
Magazine editing, book editing, or newspaper editing; or add Journalism as second teaching field and work as teacher and advisor for student publications in grades 5-12.

Technical writing:
A lucrative field for writers (minor in technical writing).

Business:
Employers are looking for people with skills in writing and communication

Legal careers:
Lawyer, para-legal (with law school or paralegal training after B.A.): law schools look favorably on English majors.

Public relations or advertising.

Web design (combine English major with graphic arts minor).
