FAIRMONT STATE’S
AMERICA READS
America Reads is a free reading enrichment program offered by Fairmont State. The program focuses on enhancing children’s love of reading for grades K thru 4th. The sessions are presented by Fairmont State students, “coaches,” who attend an extensive training session before working with the children.
During the sessions, the elementary students will hear a story, participate in reading skills games, and create a writing / art project. The sessions focus on the joy of reading to promote the children’s desire to learn to read, the first step in becoming a good reader.
America Reads is coordinated by Donna Yergovich Nuzum, Director Community Service Learning, Fairmont State University. The assistant for the program is Mark Fisher, a Fairmont State University elementary education major.
The one hour / once a week sessions, take place for seven weeks during the fall and spring semester. Because of construction on campus, the Fairmont State site is held at Faith United Methodist Church on Fairmont Ave. and Fourth St. Additionally, America Reads is offered at Monongah Elementary and through The Boys and Girls Club at Blackshere Elementary, East Park Elementary, and Watson Elementary.
Pre-registration FOR America Reads is begun the first week of September for the fall sessions and the first week of February for the spring sessions.
You may register by phone at 367-4579 (leave info on answering machine) or email nwoodson@fairmontstate.edu.
