Welcome to our “literary issue” of Traditions, celebrating the new literary map of West  Virginia, From a Place Called Solid: West Virginia and Its Writers. Available in both a rolled or  folded version, we are delighted that the map has been so well received. It hangs in classrooms, libraries, businesses, and homes throughout the mountain state and beyond. It  has its place in the Library of Congress, along with the maps of forty-three other states, and it even a part of NCTE’s (National Council of Teachers of English) Gallery of Literary Maps, displayed at the annual national conference.

In this issue, we are showcasing how the “power of pen” and the “power of folk culture” join together to illuminate this unique sense of place called West Virginia. We dedicate this special issue to Phyllis Wilson Moore, whose tireless efforts to recognize West Virginia’s authors have made this issue and literary maps realities. We thank her for “sending out the call’ which has resulted in this rich sampling of poetry, prose, criticism, and reviews unfold like a vibrant patchwork quilt throughout these pages.

We hope that you all enjoy reading these new literary pieces and are inspired to write from your own cultural perspective. For those of you who teach, we hope that you will foster West Virginia literature as an important part of learning for your students. Lastly, we hope that this issue will encourage more scholarship and resources about “West Virginia and its writers.”
