History of the Strategic Planning Process, 2005-2006

Planning Process Participants

Fairmont State University, including Fairmont State Community & Technical College (Pierpont Community and Technical College as of July 1, 2006), engaged in a dynamic strategic planning process during the period from May 2005 to June 2006. Faculty, staff, students and community representatives worked toward establishing a set of goals to direct us for the next five years.

The yearlong strategic planning process began with the creation of a Strategic Planning Steering Council, including faculty, staff, and, students. The input of community members and other stakeholders was also an important part of the process.

Four foundational task forces examined our enrollment trends; reviewed our missions, vision, and values; researched our environmental strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; and reviewed the partnership between the university and the community college. Next, seven strategic task forces developed strategic goals in the areas of community education, first year experience, graduate education, human capital, regional service and engagement, student life, and teaching and learning.

The final reports of the strategic task forces were combined into the Strategic Plan, which was reviewed by on- and off-campus stakeholders and was approved by the Board of Governors in June 2006.  Because we do expect to make some adjustments along the way, the most up-to-date action steps and timelines will always be found on our web site at www.fairmontstate.edu/StrategicPlanning.
