Working closely with other campus groups, Network, Servers & Security keeps Fairmont State University’s core information systems, technologies, and services running smoothly in the following key service areas.

Servers

  • Storage Area Network
  • Data Center
  • WAN & LAN Operations
  •  Phone Systems
  • Security
  •  Email

Servers

Hardware

The data center contains approximately 120 rack-mounted servers. The majority of these are Pentium Xeon based machines that run Windows 2003 Server. IT also supports Linux platforms and applications. Primary hardware vendors include Dell, IBM, and Sun Microsystems.

Software

The primary server operating systems and support programs are:

  • Windows 2003
  • Linux
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Oracle

The primary server applications are:

  • Payroll/Personnel System
  • Financial Accounting System
  • Banner
  • Exchange E-mail
  • Web services

Storage Area Network

One DS4400 & one DS4800 have a combined storage capacity of 25TB. DS4400 provides storage Web CT, VM ware & shared data. DS 4800 provides storage for Exchange, VM ware, Vista Development & Banner.

Tape Storage

FSU has an IBM LTO2 robotic tape unit with two tape drives, and slots for 30 tape cartridges. FSU also has an IBM LTO1 robotic tape system with slots for 18 tape cartridges.

Data Center

Data Center power is provided by an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). In the event of an external power failure, all equipment within the data center will continue to operate on battery power for a minimum of two hours. A natural gas powered generator activates automatically to recharge the batteries, providing continuous power until external power has been restored.

LAN & WAN Operations

FSU maintains two ISPs, WVNET & Time Warner, to provide a redundant connection to the outside world with a maximum through-put of 26MB. Wireless Access Points (109) located around campus provide internet connections up to & including 54Mbps while, wired connections provide 100Mbps.

Phone System

Emergency Phones located around FSU provide a direct connection to Marion County 911 and provide the dispatcher the exact location of the emergency phone. FSU’s E911 service increases the response time of emergency workers to the proper location on campus, Marion County 911 Dispatch receives the building name and room number of where the 911 call was placed.

FSU utilizes Voice Over IP through Cisco Call Manager which also provides users with voice mail. Users with analog phones can use VOIP via VG224s which convert the analog signal to a digital signal.

Two T1 lines provide VOIP & Internet services to FSU campus satellites in Lewis & Braxton counties.

Email

Campus E-mail services are provided via Microsoft Exchange for faculty/staff and Mirapoint Messaging Server for student Web mail. Mailing lists and distribution jobs can be handled by Lsoft software.

Security

Anti-Virus Efforts

FSU uses McAfee Antivirus for its primary client workstation virus protection. Updated virus signature files are distributed via SMS as they are released, usually weekly. The updates are also available via the IT Help Desk Page.

Additionally, all incoming and outgoing email is scanned for viruses and spam via Can-IT Pro. Viral attachments are automatically cleaned; if possible, otherwise they are deleted. Spam is returned to the sender with a disposition message containing an incident number, if deliverable. This incident number can be utilized to trace delivery issues through the IT Help Desk if the sender believes the blocking was done in error.
