Greek Life Impact

Greek Life

For many students, Greek life – joining a fraternity or sorority – is an essential and unforgettable part of the college experience. At Fairmont State University, we aim to offer a wide range of options for social life and community involvement, and as such, we are proud to offer Greek life as part of our campus experience.

Greek Life has a strong and rich tradition at hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States and Canada, as well as here at Fairmont State. The terms "fraternity" and "sorority" refer to groups of men and women (respectively) who join together to offer fellowship, academic support, and an outlet for philanthropic service to the community and institution, as well as the opportunity to network for future careers. They are referred to as Greek chapters because they are named according to the ancient Greek alphabet. All of our Greek chapters at Fairmont State are affiliated with a national organization.

The Greek system offers many opportunities to meet and connect with people, contribute to the community, and develop leadership skills. The academic benefits are significant as well: research indicates that students who are affiliated with a club or organization are more likely to achieve academically and persist in their studies.

Interested? How to Get Involved

Many of our local Greek chapters regularly have a table in or around the Falcon Center for outreach efforts. You can chat with them there about their organizations and what it takes to join.

Formal recruitment takes place over a week at the beginning of the Fall semester. During the recruitment process, fraternities and sororities host recruitment nights at which you can get to know them better and vice-versa. Bids are later extended to qualifying potential new members whom the organizations feel are the best fit.

Some organizations are allowed to participate in Continuous Open Bidding and recruit members throughout the year. The recruitment process for our historically Black chapters typically takes place in the Spring semester by invitation.

Greek Life chapters, along with all RSOs on campus, shall have a campus advisor who is a full-time faculty or staff member that is not in an administrative position. A campus advisor for these chapters must be reported to the Coordinator of Student Organizations and Greek Life via a  Change of Leadership form. While some organizations can choose to have a community advisor, these advisors will not be a substitute for a campus advisor and they will not be a point of contact.

For more details on how you can get involved and to learn more about what to expect, as well as the benefits of joining the Greek Life community, please visit our Greek Life Recruitment page.
