Instructional Design and Technology

Learn to create and implement effective technology and media rich learning experiences through an understanding of learning theory, instructional design principles, technology, and application. Explore and create a range of digital media (educational software, curriculum materials, gaming, mobile computing, social networks, digital stories) and reflect on your applications to educational issues in different disciplines and core content areas. Gain the skills you need to teach the 21st Century literacies and skills to succeed in the digital age. Become a leader and mentor in the use of digital media and technology to promote 21st Century literacies and skills.

Mission

The mission of the Instructional Design and Technology program is to make education more powerful for all students by creating opportunities to engage in learning that is relevant to their lives and prepares them for success in school, the workplace, and their community. Participants in this program develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions needed to design technology-based media rich learning environments and become instructional leaders and agents of change in formal and Informal educational settings.

Program Outcomes

Program graduates are prepared to:

  • Design technology-based media rich learning environments that support the learning of all students.
  • Apply learning and curriculum theories to assess the effectiveness of technology and media rich learning environments in creating meaningful and motivating learning experiences for learners.
  • Develop a broadened understanding of what it means to be literate that includes the reading and writing of multimodal texts as integral elements of social practices.
  • Identify barriers and solutions to change for a professional teaching/learning community attempting to adopt new technologies or practices.
  • Use responsible practices that relate to creating and using digital media in learning environments such as with intellectual property law, confidentiality, privacy, and ethics.

Apply your digital literacy knowledge and skills in K-12 classrooms, higher education, nonprofit education, corporate training, educational content development, instructional design, the development of educational products or services (entrepreneurship), and building school - community partnerships.

Collaboration with Katherine Johnson NASA IV&V Educational Resource Center 

Instructional Design and Technology graduate students have the opportunity to work with the NASA IV&V Educator Resource Center (ERC) in various courses. Some ways students may engage in "real world" work with the ERC include educational activity revision, instructional design module creation, online content curation and creation, infographic development, experiential learning, and data analytics, to name but a few.

The Instructional Design and Technology program is pleased to announce internship opportunities at The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). Program Admission Requirements

  • Submit admissions application to the Office of Admissions. Apply online now!
  • Pay $50 application fee along with application
  • Submit official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions
  • Minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA

Once the Fairmont State Office of Admissions receives all of the required documents, your application file will be reviewed by the Department of Education.
